El Turronero

New Hondo

NuNorthern Soul

Blimey.
The legendary flamenco singer Manuel Mancheño Peña — aka El Turronero, The Nougat — full throttle over a flanged, action-packed disco-funk bassline, metronomic beats. soaring and layered female backing vocals, intergalactic synth sounds and stirring strings. The flip is looser, groovier, and warmer, with still funkier bass, spiralling seventies synths, sweaty drums, and exotic touches.

Awesome Tapes From Africa

Two teenagers’ amapiano music from Gauteng province in South Africa, drawing on jazz, folk, afro, deep and tech house, kwaito, and dibacardi… but sounding like none of them.

Sacred Soul Of North Carolina

Bible And Tire

‘Eleven groups in eight days in February 2020, on the eve of a global pandemic. A marathon recording session in a makeshift storefront studio in a 100-year-old building in the tiny Eastern North Carolina town of Fountain. Once the idea for the project was in place, Alice Vines of the Glorifying Vines Sisters started calling local musicians. It didn’t take her long to line up almost a dozen groups to come lift their voices and represent the region’s unique Sacred Soul traditions.’

This Is Lowrider Soul

Vol. 2

Kent

Another knockout diggers’ selection of sweet, stately soul music; heavy on the hurt and harmony, just like its predecessor.
Both volumes are stuffed with killlers, and hotly recommended.
Terrific.

Elijah Rockin' With Soul

Call Me

Hank Jacobs was an accomplished West coast keyboard player, who smashed it with So Far Away in 1964.
One of his four releases on Alton Scott’s LA-based Call Me label, the slamming Elijah Rockin’ With Soul is a Northern favourite; whilst the more sophisticated, cool, sunroof-down East Side is a Popcorn and Lowrider go-to.
