Ethiopian Urban Modern Music

Volume 3: More Ethiopian Soul And Groove

Heavenly Sweetness

Marcos Valle

O Compositor E O Cantor

Vampisoul

His second LP is foundational bossa. With the spotlight on acoustic guitar and his caressing voice, these are spare, intimate renditions of songs which would become much-versioned standards, severally revisited by Valle himself. Listen out for the blueprints of Astrud Gilberto’s hits The Face I Love and So Nice, for example.

The Body & The Soul

Impulse! / Third Man

Aged 25, signing off Impulse! with a wayward flourish, Hubbard plays beautifully throughout, boldly leading an orchestra and string section, 16-piece big band, and a septet with Curtis Fuller, Eric Dolphy, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman, and Louis Hayes. Shorter is arranger and conductor. Buckle up for Dolphy flipping his wig in Clarence’s Place.

Soul Message

Prestige

RH came through with Les McCann and Gerald Wilson. Prestige tried him out with Gene Ammons and Joe Pass, before this trio debut as leader, in 1965.
Top-notch, archetypal soul jazz — the opener states the case, the closer sums up — hard-swinging, blues-saturated, lots of chords, propulsive bass, open and gritty.
Nicely Latinized version of Song For My Father.

Diplomats Of Soul

The 1980 LP by this versatile organist, mainstay of the Washington jazz scene, who played with everyone from Chuck Brown to George Benson. Featuring the funky dancer Bebop Boogie, teeming with jazzy elan, and replete with breaks ‘n’ beats opening and numerous breakdowns, school of Take Me To The Mardi Gras.

Muzik City / Dub Store

Rollicking, mid-sixties, post-Skatalites ska thriller, led by Bobby Ellis and Roland Alphonso, with slightly different soloing to the original release.
Backed with a charming, forsaken, rare Summertairs: ‘I love you, Errol… come back today… but not too late… Errol, my dear.’
