Still going today, Belenou was founded by Edmond Mondesir and Leon Bertide in 1980, in the service of bele, traditional music from Martinique, running back to slavery days.
Chimen Ta La — ‘This Road’ — was originally released in 1983, on the APAL label (Ase Plere An Nou Lite, ‘Enough Crying, Time To Fight’).
The music is warmly organic and rootsy, body-rocking, communal and defiant. Straightaway you can hear elements of grounation, calypso, jazz, Latin, compas, zouk and West African dance.
Leritaj is dedicated to African heritage music within the diaspora. This first release is great stuff, highly recommended.
